Despite massive fears that Algerian Riyad Mahrez could miss the start of the 2018/19 English Premier League season for Manchester City due to injury, it has since been confirmed he is fighting fit.
The striker’s preseason tour with City in the United States came to an abrupt end when he was carried off the pitch this past Sunday in a match against Bundesliga side Bayern Munich.
Pictures later emerged which showed Mahrez flying back to Manchester with his ankle in a protective boot which sparked speculation that the striker would miss the start of the season.
City, though, have quickly shot down those rumours by stating that the player is fit and likely to return to training this week.
“Riyad has been given the all-clear to return to training later this week after picking up an ankle knock,” City said on their website.
“A scan has revealed no significant damage, and he could be available for selection for this weekend’s Community Shield against Chelsea.”
Coach Pep Guardiola will breathe a sigh of relief and hope to see his £60 million record signing in action sooner rather than later.
City will open up the English football season this coming Sunday, August 5 in a Community Shield match against Chelsea
City then get their Premier League campaign underway when they take on Arsenal on Sunday, August 12.
