Cape Town City bagged their fourth win in all competitions over Bidvest Wits, as they triumphed 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup last 32 on Wednesday night at Bidvest Stadium.
The Citizens found the net through an early goal from debutant Matthew Rusike to reach the next stage.
Coach Benni McCarthy’s men started on the front foot and Rusike opened the scoring as early as the second minute when he converted Teko Modise’s delivery to beat Darren Keet with a superb header.
The hosts responded four minutes later with a set piece and Vincent Pule forced Shu-Aib Walters to punch away the delivery for a corner.
Wits were dominant in as far as goal-scoring chances were concerned, but they were not clinical enough to beat Walters and his defence towards the 30th minute.
Despite their efforts to level the scores, the Clever Boys could not find cracks in the solid City defence, as it was 1-0 at the interval.
Upon their return, they continued to exert pressure on their visitors and nearly scored on the 50th minute when Thulani Hlatshwayo’s rocket was blocked by Modise on the goal line.
Wits’ Gavin Hunt introduced changes in the likes of Frank Mhango and Thobani Mncwango upfront, but the Mother City side remained stable.
The Malawian striker would make a great turn in the box, but his effort could not trouble Walters as it sailed wide in the last six minutes.
Wits had a chance in injury time, but Bongani Khumalo’s effort was saved by Walters, who held on to deny him.
