Bayern Munich attacker James Rodriguez has taken the next step in his recovery from injury by returning to training on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old sustained what was described as “a minor complaint in his left calf muscle” in the club’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie at home to Besiktas on 20 February, a game Jupp Heynckes’ charges eventually won 5-0.

He has been absent ever since, missing Bayern’s subsequent games against Hertha Berlin and Freiburg. However, on Tuesday morning he took to the training pitches at the club’s Säbener Straße complex again and completed a series of running exercises under the guidance of the coaching staff, as well as performing some drills with the ball.

Bayern welcome Hamburg to the Allianz Arena on Matchday 26 this Saturday, and while that fixture may come too soon for the Colombia international, who has contributed four goals and six assists in only 16 Bundesliga appearances so far, he could return to action in the return leg away to Besiktas on 14 March.
