Zinédine Zidane became the first coach to win the European Cup in three successive seasons as Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 in Kyiv, and joined Carlo Ancelotti as the only coach to have won the competition three times in the UEFA Champions League era.

Before his latest victory, the 45-year-old was already the only coach to have claimed back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles – and the first to have won consecutive editions of Europe’s top club competition since Arrigo Sacchi doubled up with AC Milan in 1989 and 1990.

He is not the first coach to lift the trophy three times. Bob Paisley took that honour when his Liverpool side beat Real Madrid in the 1981 edition.

Carlo Ancelotti, meanwhile, set a precedent by winning the competition three times in the UEFA Champions League era when he landed the silverware with Real Madrid in 2014, having also led AC Milan to successes in 2003 and 2007.

Zidane has matched Ancelotti’s record with victory in Kyiv, and has now captured the trophy four times – three times as coach and once as a player, having also scored one of the most memorable goals in the competition’s history in Madrid’s 2-1 final success against Leverkusen in 2002.

Ancelotti, though, still has the edge on Zidane, the Italian having won the competition five times in total: three times as coach and in 1989 and 1990 as a player with Sacchi’s Milan.
