Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr has expressed confidence in coach Aliou Cisse, saying he must remain in the coaching role for the Lions of Teranga manager.
The 20-year-old Stade Rennis forward featured in all of Teranga Lions’ three matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Despite Senegal’s disappointing early World Cup exit, the striker believes the former skipper is the right man for the job.
The West Africans beat Poland 2-1 and drew 2-2 against Japan, but lost 1-0 to Colombia as they failed to reach the Last 16.
Following the exclusion of players such as Crystal Palace full-back Pape Souare, Newcastle United’s Mohamed Diame and Saint-Etienne left-back Cheikh Mbengue from the final World Cup squad, Cisse was heavily criticised by many.
However, Sarr believes the coach had to make his choices in team selection, saying he must be supported.
“We have a good coach,” Sarr told French magazine L’Obs.
“Those who hold criticism (against Cisse) do not live with the squad. If they were there, they would know his value. I do not agree with those who think he is fumbling.
“The coach has his choices. He can be wrong just as he can be right. The choices belong to him. Personally, I think he made good choices. If the coach opts for a player, it is certainly that he has confidence in him.”
